To find the cutting angles for stave construction:
SBA = inverse TAN (1÷{cosS * tan[360÷(2N)]})
MA= inverse tan (cosSBA*tanS)
S= Slope
N= Number of staves
MA= Miter angle
SBA= Saw blade angle

Fire Place Mantel
Segmented Vase
I started by first drawing a cross section of the shape with each ring being 5/16" tall. For this
vase there were 14 rings. I then drew each ring out on a sheet of paper starting with the largest
ring first, drawing both outside and inside radius's using a compass (see Layout). To save
wood, I put smaller rings inside the larger rings (will soon have photos showing this). I cut 8
strips of wood 5/16"w x 1"t x 2'9" long using 2 different contrasting woods and glued them
together, alternating the wood strips (1,2,3). Once dried, I ran the laminated board through a
thickness planer (or drum sander) so that both sides were flat and parallel. I then resawed the
board on the bandsaw as shown in photo 4. I laid the two halves next to each other so that the
alternating pattern is not interrupted and glued it up. The board was then run through a drum
sander to a thickness of 5/16", the end grain is now 5/16" x 5/16". To be continued......
